ABOUT FCBD® STYLE

FatChanceBellyDance® Style dance, or FatChance® Style/FCBD® Style, has also been known by its original name, American Tribal Style®, or ATS®.  Created by Carolena Nericcio and established in 1987, this improvisational group dance style has reached all corners of the globe and has become the most common movement language in the belly dance world.

This dance form utilizes a lead and follow format.  This means that each dance step has a cue, which allows each leader to improvise the order of movements on the spot with the followers reacting in real time.  Along with the movement vocabulary, there are special formations and large group presentations designed to create a varied and exciting show.  It, not only is a feast for the eyes, but it is also a rewarding, collaborative activity for the dancers!

ABOUT SANDI

Studying with Carolena Nericcio and FatChanceBellyDance® since the summer of 1998; performing and teaching with FCBD® since 2003, Sandi Ball has experienced FatChance® Style at the source, throughout many of its progressions.  Her focus maintains much of the earthy origins of tribal improvisation – creating inside the immediate experience, collective thinking within the group, and the understanding that the key to the success of a performance is at the center of the circle.

With a degree in sculptural art, Sandi’s philosophy around dance and communication was unique to her way of teaching – inserting design concepts, 3-dimensional visualizations, and many other aspects of visual art.  Her style had a rich subtlety, with a strong air of confidence.  She had shared her process and the way she had learned the art of FCBD® Style in an open and honest manner.  She subscribed to the idea that FCBD® Style can fit like a glove, in that, it molds to the body, enveloping its unique movements, so that it looks natural on each person.  She has celebrated that uniqueness in each student and has encouraged the glove of FCBD® Style to be worn effortlessly through her intuitive and informed instruction.

As FCBD® Instructor, Emerita, Sandi has enjoyed bringing her experience and knowledge of FCBD® Style to the world through her eyes.  As of the end of 2022, Sandi has retired from teaching and performing FCBD® Style.
